There is general agreement that cognitive impairment, a core feature of schizophrenia, has a key influence on social function in patients. Meanwhile, assessment of cognitive function in schizophrenia has usually been based upon an extensive neuropsychological test battery, which is costly and time consuming, and requires trained specialists. The Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia(BACS) is a newly developed instrument for clinical trials, which assesses several domains of cognition found to be most impaired and strongly correlated with outcome in patients with schizophrenia；verbal memory, working memory, motor speed, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function. The BACS requires only about 30 min of testing time with minimal extra time for scoring and minimal training demands. For its clinical application, we prepared the Japanese-language version of the BACS(BACS-J). The BACS-J was established through back-translation into English, which was checked by the author of the scale.
